Stapedotomy

A stapedotomy is performed when otosclerosis is suspected. It is usually done under general anesthesia and most of the time a microscope is used as opposed to key-hole surgery. After the fixation of the stapes is confirmed the top part of the stapes is removed and replaced by a prosthesis that hooks around the incus. Both ears can be done but never at the same time. For two weeks after the surgery the patient must not strain (so pick up heavy objects etc.) and must prevent being constipated.
