Ménière’s Disease

Meniere’s disease is a condition caused by excessive fluid in the inner ear. This leads to episodes of spinning (minutes to hours in duration), hearing loss with the attacks (often fluctuant hearing loss), tinnitus and occasionally a feeling of pressure in the ear during an episode. Special investigations might include a hearing test, brain scan and in certain circumstances vestibular tests like a VNG.

The treatment is a stepwise approach and individualised. It can include oral medications, injection into the middle ear and in very rare circumstances surgery.
