Epistaxis (Nose Bleeds)

Nose bleeds are a common condition that can affect any age. Often no obvious cause can be found but infection, inflammation, trauma, systemic diseases, medication and in rare circumstances growths can lead to nose bleeds.

Treatment – when your nose bleeds the first thing to do is to pinch the nose just below the tip – in most cases this will be enough. If the bleeding does not settle or if the episodes are recurring medical attention should be sought. Systemic causes will be ruled out, the nose will be examined for local causes and if a vessel is seen it will be cauterised (chemical or cautery). If this does not help theatre will be considered.
