Mastoidectomy

A mastoidectomy is done to remove the cholesteatoma (a benign growth). The surgery is always done under general anesthesia and the extend of the disease depicts whether keyhole surgery or more extensive surgery is necessary. An ear plug is normally left in the ear for 2-4 weeks. The aim of the surgery is to remove the disease and create a dry and safe ear but if possible the hearing will be preserved or attempt made to improve it. Swimming can only be done once the ear canal skin has healed.
