Tongue Tie
A tongue tie is a condition where the fibrous band under the tongue (or upper lip) is too short and therefore limits free movement of the tongue. In a child this can hinder feeding and later cause speech problems. The diagnosis is often made by a lactation consultant, pediatrician, GP, speech- or physiotherapist. Not all tongue ties have to be operated on and each case is examined individually.
A tongue tie release can be done under local anaesthetic for new born babies but older children need sedation. It is not a painful operation and takes only a few minutes to perform.
