Sinusitis
Sinusitis refers to an infection (viral or bacterial) or inflammation of the nasal passages or the sinuses. It can be acute or chronic (if symptoms last longer than 3 months). Symptoms vary according to the severity but also to which of the 4 sinuses are involved (as they are situated in different areas of the face). Symptoms might range from not being able to smell, blocked nose, nasal discharge or post nasal drip and headaches.
An ENT will normally do a naso endoscopy and order a CT scan if needed. Treatment ranges from medications (antibiotics, steroid nasal sprays or oral steroids and douching with salt water / saline). If no response to medical treatment is noted, surgery will be the next step. Surgery is called a FESS (Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery) or just Endoscopic Sinus Surgery.
