Anosmia (Inability to smell) or hyposmia (reduced smell) have a huge impact on the quality of life of patients. Often a loss of smell also causes a patient to perceive a loss of taste. The causes range from blockage of the nose (so the particles cannot reach the smell centre), nerve damage (after trauma or a viral infection – often seen in Covid) and in rare cases the problem might be situated in the brain region.

The ENT will start with a nasal endoscopy but most cases will need a CT or MRI scan.
