Ménière’s Disease
Meniere’s disease is a condition caused by excessive fluid in the inner ear. This leads to episodes of spinning (minutes to hours in duration), hearing loss (often fluctuant hearing loss), tinnitus and occasionally a feeling of pressure in the ear. Special investigations might include a hearing test, brain scan and in certain circumstances vestibular tests like a VNG.
The treatment is a stepwise approach and individualised. It can include oral medications, injections into the middle ear and in very rare circumstances surgery.
